Principal's Message

{Adam Clark Photo 2011}

Hello Miramonte Community,

On Monday, May 14th we will hold a sports information session in the gym at 6:30 p.m. This evening is primarily for our incoming and current freshmen families. Everyone is invited to come and meet current coaches as well as hear essential Miramonte sports information.

Open House will be held Thursday, May 17th. The evening will start with a "picnic on the green" at 5:30pm. Various vendors will provide food for purchase. Classrooms will be open from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Come out to visit with teachers and celebrate your student's accomplishments.

Senior Alexandra Glazer became a semifinalist, and won $4875, for her performance in the CA Lions Club 75th annual Student Speakers Contest. This year's topic was "What could the America of yesterday teach the America of tomorrow?" and Alex's speech was about the importance of community. Her performance in this contest is the best in Miramonte history!

PC President's Message

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you Miramonte Teachers for all that you do to teach and support our students throughout the year! Thank you Kacy Richardson and Victoria Bizieff for bringing in special treats as a token of our appreciation. Parents, you too have the opportunity to thank Miramonte teachers and visit your students' classrooms by attending Open House next Thursday, May 17th. Bring your students and join us for dinner at 5:30 in the quad where Top Dog and El Paraiso will be offering popular options.

Next week is the Spring Play entitled THENOW, an original work written by our very own Miramonte students. You won't want to miss one of the three performances on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.

The school year is quickly drawing to a close and once again Miramonte was able to maintain a tradition of excellence thanks to parent and community support. The Parents' Club and EFO work together to provide the current breadth of academic and enrichment programs offered by our school. It takes both of us and EFO still needs your help to achieve its Miramonte goal for the year. If you haven't yet donated to EFO please consider helping out before the school year ends. Our students are counting on you!

Campus Highlight: University of the Pacific

With ivy-covered brick and shaded lawns, you might not guess that you were in Stockton, CA, but the campus of University of the Pacific is one of California's hidden gems. Founded in 1851, it is a comprehensive university with over 80 majors and almost 4,000 undergraduate students. Music, engineering, business and health sciences are all particularly strong programs. The School of Music is a conservatory-style program and also includes options for majoring in music therapy, jazz studies, music management and music education. All students in the College of Engineering have at least 7 months paid work experience in the field before graduation. In the School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, students can work toward the degrees and professional certification for pharmacy, physical therapy and speech pathology to name a few. Students can apply for the fast-track Doctor of Pharmacy in 5 or 6 years, or the BA + Doctor of Pharmacy in 7 years. The student body at Pacific is a diverse group. They are focused on their studies but also involved in campus life. There are many active clubs, community service organizations, honors societies, and a Greek system.

2012 MATS DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

While we haven't yet completed this school year, the MATS DAY committee has begun planning for the 2012-2013 MATS DAY event scheduled on Wednesday, August 15th from 8:00am -12:00pm. Kristen Correll and Susie Epstein are working together to plan for the event. This is an important day for our students. It gives them the opportunity to have their photo taken, IDs processed, parking permits purchased, various forms turned in - and most importantly they get their schedules.

There will be only ONE SHIFT - from 7:45am - 12:15pm. We need a minimum of 28 parent volunteers to make this day run smoothly. If you agree to help, we will contact you in early August as a reminder and to give you a copy of your assignment for the morning. Contact Susie Epstein if you can help at this fun event.

Think of the Children If Funding Falls Short

Here we are, almost at the end of the school year, and EFO is not yet fully funded for 2011-2012. The deadline to reach our $1,515,000 goal is May 31st. If you have not yet donated, please act now. Does your business match contributions? If it does, visit our Employer Matching information page to find out how to double your donation. When we all do our part to fund EFO, significant programs at Orinda's elementary, middle, and high schools remain intact. These programs, such as music, art, and class-size reduction at the four elementary schools, electives and a librarian at OIS, and core academic courses, electives, and student support programs like the library and counseling at Miramonte, support academics and enrich students' lives. Contribute today - visit EFO's website to read more about the programs funded and to donate online.

Legislative Update

Monday, May 14th
the Governor will present his "May Revise" to the Proposed 2012-13 State Budget. How does that affect Miramonte? The amount of state funding that our school district receives for next year will primarily be determined by two things:
(1) What's proposed in the May Revise for per student funding (Revenue Limit) and categorical funding, AND (2) Whether that funding proposal gets changed by negotiations between legislators and the Governor by June 30th, the legal deadline for the state budget adoption, AND school district budget adoption.

THANK YOU to everyone who sent in letters to our legislators over the past week. The Joint Legislative Hearing of the Education Committees on Weighted Student Formula which had been scheduled for Wednesday, May 9th was CANCELLED, due to anticipated changes in the Governor's May Revise. Please stay tuned. More info to follow in response to the May Revise!
