Student Council
 
Student Council plays a vital role in the Miramonte community. The Council creates a link between  students, faculty, and administration. Student Council allows students to have a say in Miramonte activities. It helps create an environment in which every voice is heard.

Associated Student Body Officers Job Descriptions:
 
ASB Officers (4 elected)
  • Lead the class during weekly ASB meetings
  • Select Yearly Goals
  • Oversee the organization of ALL Homecoming events including selection of homecoming court.
  • Select Homecoming theme and Community Event
  • Work with Leadership teacher to implement class grading plan
  • Responsible for overseeing assigned committees
  • Generate ideas and programs to improve the school
  • Oversee lunchtime activities
  • Works with Leadership teacher to organize and motivate student leaders
  • Attend weekly meeting with the ASB advisor
  • Organize fundraising for ASB and Leadership class
  • Organizes “Recognition Weeks” for the various academic teams, athletic teams,departments, and Miramonte staffers
  • Organize all social functions for Leadership class
  • Attend Mats Day to assist as needed – organize volunteer time slots
  • Ensure that representatives from each class attend monthly Coordinating Council meetings
  • Work with leadership class, Parent’s Club and administration to provide positive school publicity
  • Plan activities that encourage involvement of all groups on campus
  • Organize class for Back to School and Open House nights
  • Meet with Executive Council each month
  • Attend Monthly Parents Club meetings to give student input.

Individually, their specific duties are:
 

ASB President (elected)

  • Presides over ASB and Leadership class activities, including Homecoming
  • Prepares weekly ASB meetings
  • Prepares and presides over monthly Student Council meetings (House of Reps)
  • Presides over monthly Executive Council meetings
  • Attend monthly Parents Club meetings and report on ASB events and ASB Executive Council concerns.
  • Communicates all school related issues/concerns to the student body via BlackBoard newsletter.
  • Assists with selection of appointed positions
  • Represents student body in school and community meetings and activities as needed
  • Ensure that representatives from attend monthly Coordinating Council, Diversity and School Board meetings
  • Presents a welcome speech at Back to School night
  • Oversees Rally & Spirit, Dance and Major Activities Commissioners and Senior Officers
  • Oversees Homecoming daily activities
  • Works with fellow ASB officers to organize all social functions for the Leadership class

ASB Vice President (elected)

  • Conducts elections: freshmen selections, student body and the following year’s class officers
  • Assumes leadership in the absence of the president
  • Attends meetings in absence of the president
  • Assists with selection of appointed positions
  • Assist with assemblies (usually one per semester)
  • Works with fellow ASB officers to organize all social functions for the Leadership class and Sets up yearbook and professional picture for class
  • Oversees Sports, Club and Social Awareness Commissioners and Junior Officers
  • Keep track of class logs and gives regular updates to the leadership teacher
  • Oversees half time events

ASB Secretary (elected)

  • Writes, duplicates and distributes minutes for weekly ASB meetings and monthly Student Council meetings
  • Prepares Student Council meeting agendas
  • Ensures Communication Commissioner updates master calendar and bulletins
  • Creates ASB Awards and a way to select recipients (Matador Merit of Excellence)
  • Keeps leadership attendance and hour of power. Regular updates to teacher.
  • Oversees Homecoming community events
  • Assists with selection of appointed positions
  • Maintains the leadership email account for correspondence
  • Maintains Student mail boxes
  • Keep all forms stocked in the trays.
  • Create supply orders for class materials (colored paper, ink cartridges, etc.) and gives to ASB Treasurer for ordering
  • Thanks all businesses sponsors and volunteers (donations, Snack Shack for class)
  • Works with fellow ASB officers to organize all social functions for the Leadership class
  • Oversees Publicity and Communications Commissioners and Sophomore Officers
  • Notify class of events via Blackboard including where, when and what to wear

ASB Treasurer (elected)

  • Works with the school bookkeeper and advisor to develop student body budget
  • Organizes and approves all ASB related purchases and purchase orders
  • Works with bookkeeper to monitor and communicate the school’s budget status to Student Council
  • Oversees Homecoming court
  • Oversee student volunteers for ASB Snack Shack, including parents
  • Assists with selection of appointed positions
  • Responsible for ASB and Leadership class fundraising
  • Monthly meeting with leadership teacher to review accounts.
  • Works with fellow ASB officers to organize all social functions for the Leadership class
  • Order and account for all t-shirts ordered – class shirts etc.
  • Responsible for placing all classroom materials and supplies orders based upon budgets

Commissioner Job Descriptions

Rally and Spirit (2 elected)

  • Responsible for all aspects of rallies, including draft scripts, final scripts, props
  • Find appropriate MCs (final script due 3 weeks before each rally)
  • Work with Activities Commissioners and other members of the Leadership class to brainstorm ideas for rallies
  • Organize rally run-throughs before each rally
  • Oversee Homecoming lunchtime activities – plan and execute
  • MC during Homecoming activities
  • Lunchtime events (one per month)
  • Spirit Days (one per month)
  • Give monthly calendar of events to ASB Secretary
  • Meet with the ASB team at least once per month to discuss activities, etc.
  • Regularly submit activity proposals to advisor and administration (three weeks prior to events)
  • Plan and implement weekly Mats Check including maintains of gift card stock.
  • Communicate regularly with cafeteria manager to get approval for all lunchtime activities
  • Reports to ASB President

Dance and Major Activity Commissioner (2 ea. Appointed)

  • Oversees Homecoming with ASB – Dance and Community Event
  • Oversees major fundraiser in the spring ex: Mr. MHS
  • Organizes all dances, coordinates with DJ
  • Orders dance supplies/decorations after consulting with ASB Treasurer
  • Establishes school group to assist with plans and execute events
  • Keep spirit inventory current and up to date (streamers, helium tank, balloons (submit orders to ASB Treasurer)
  • Reports to ASB President

Sports Commissioner (2 ea. Appointed)

  • Create publicity for all sports games
  • Liaison with all sports captains
  • Coordinate Homecoming half time – Cheer, band, coach, royalty committee
  • Organize staff vs. students games (Block M Basketball, softball, etc.)
  • Create quarterly lunchtime tournaments – video games, dodgeball, ultimate Frisbee,
  • Design and sell t-shirts for leadership activities (t-shirts ordered by ASB Treasurer)
  • Organize half court shoot-outs, half time shows for football and basketball
  • Organize rules, practices, coaches, adult supervision, referees, permission slips and captains for Powder Puff in the fall
  • Communicate regularly with Athletic Director to update athletic calendar.
  • Organize practice for annual softball game
  • Encourage participation from all parts of campus
  • Reports to ASB Vice President

Clubs/Community Service Commissioner (1 ea. Appointed)

  • Liaison with all clubs – create contact list with emails of each president
  • Coordinate all fundraisers with ASB calendar
  • Leads a club orientation meeting in the fall: fundraising, responsibilities, things the president of a new club must do, etc.
  • Organize club packets, approvals
  • Organizes Club Day in September
  • heads holiday drives and plans other community service on campus
  • Fosters communication and cooperation between clubs
  • Help publicize club events with posters, fliers and on Blackboard (email)
  • Reports to ASB Vice President

Communications Commissioner (1 ea. Appointed)

  • Attend school board meetings
  • Attend coordinating council meetings
  • Communicates with House of Reps about meetings
  • Create and send out ASB News & Events newsletter
  • Update Blackboard with events (announcements mailed to students)
  • Blackboard Communications specialist to help maintain all communication
  • Monthly calendar of all MHS events
  • Monthly calendar with school events for all teachers (rallies, assemblies, etc.)
  • Awards and recipients
  • Student Council Meetings and post minutes
  • Updates the school Marquee
  • Prepare album with pictures and records of the year’s events
  • Plans class bonding activities, post success parties, field trips, secret buddies
  • Reports to ASB Secretary

Social Awareness Commissioner (1 ea. Appointed)

  • Is an active member of social outreach clubs
  • Work with groups to organize Diversity, Environmental, Language and Clean Campus events
  • Organize monthly staff appreciation with class – teacher buddies, etc.
  • Plan ride-your-bike-to-school days and energy conservation days
  • Ensure all publicity campaigns are socially aware and positive for students
  • Communicate teacher concerns regarding ASB events
  • Attend district diversity meetings and report back minutes back to ASB Secretary for posting to Blackboard.
  • Run the annual art contest for the Diversity calendar.
  • Oversee the charity drives in December
  • Work with Club Commissioner and REACH to organize community service fair in spring
  • Work with ASB officers to plan community service for leadership class
  • Works with Freshman Officers to get them oriented to how ASB functions
  • Reports to ASB Vice President

Technology Commissioner (3 ea. appointed)

  • Work with Rally Commissioners in planning and organizing rallies
  • Work with Activities Commissioner to plan and organize lunchtime activities
  • Work with Sports Commissioner to plan and organize tournaments
  • Oversee music library to ensure approved music is legally obtained.
  • Create music mixes upon request.
  • Set up and run audio and video equipment at all rallies, lunch activities, tournaments, movie nights, homecoming events, etc.
  • Play lunch music on weeks that events are not scheduled
  • Video and edit all events for final rally video
  • Attend a mandatory Training Day to learn how to use the sound system
  • Assist Communications Officer with updating and emailing via Blackboard
  • Reports to ASB Treasurer

Publicity (2 ea. appointed)

  • Creates publicity campaigns and works with Technology and Communication Officers-
  • Provide posters and fliers for clubs, athletics, school activities, and class events
  • Organizes committees in Leadership class to assist with publicity at major events like Homecoming
  • Orders and keeps track of all leadership publicity supplies and inventory: poster supplies,
  • etc. through ASB Treasurer.
  • Monitor posters and fliers on campus – Put up AND Takes down
  • Coordinate bulletin and marquee information for all leadership committees and officers
  • Responsible for maintaining all areas to ensure they are cleaned up and equipment is used correctly
  • Reports to ASB Secretary
Class Officer Job Descriptions:
 

Elected Class Officers (4 per grade level = 16)

Class officers are active members of the leadership class representing the entire student body.  All four officers work as a team, meeting regularly with parent advisors to plan and organize events and activities for the benefit of their class.  Overall responsibilities include:

  • Organize and participate in at least 2 community service projects a year
  • Fundraise the following (not including Snack Shack or Class Shirts): $750 – Frosh, $1000 -  Soph, $1000 – Junior, $750 - Senior
  • Planning their class’s portion of homecoming
  • Plan class trips or special events (e.g., for seniors, baccalaureate, graduation, , etc.)
  • Seniors plan quarterly senior class activities
  • Quarterly appreciation for teachers that teach and sections to their grade level
  • Maintain communication with parent and class liaisons
  • Organize participation in class competitions
  • Attend Mats Day, Back to School and Open House to assist as needed
  • Attend monthly Student Council meetings
  • Decorate their section of the gym for rallies
  • One officer must attend each monthly Coordinating Council meeting
  • Obtain student volunteers for Snack Shack
  • Coordinate class shirt design competition, order and distribute at Mats Day
Their specific duties are:
 

President

  • Presides over their class meetings with fellow officers and teacher advisors
  • Creates and maintains a class binder with all agendas, minutes, and budgets
  • Is aware of all class budgetary concerns
  • Represents class at school activities
  • Represents class at Student Council meetings
  • Responsible for ensuring that one of the class officers attends each Coordinating Council
  • meeting
  • Delegate responsibility by involving class members in committee work
  • Responsible for Snack Shack Volunteers

Vice President

  • In the absence of the president, presides over class and class officers meetings
  • Prepares and maintains time line of events, due dates, and responsibilities
  • Represents class at school activities
  • Represents class at Student Council meetings
  • Oversees the class community service projects

Secretary

  • Takes minutes of class officer meetings and distributes copies to officers
  • Publicizes class meetings (if before school, after school, or during lunch)
  • Keep records of committee members for projects activities and fund raisers
  • Provides information to class members through emails, bulletin announcements, Blackboard, etc.
  • Is responsible for all correspondence including thank you notes
  • Maintains a record of correspondence and saves in class binder
  • Writes and distributes monthly newsletter for the class (via blackboard, email, etc.)

Treasurer

  • Develops budget with bookkeeper, class officers and advisors
  • Maintains and presents monthly class budget records to officers, teacher advisor, and Leadership teacher
  • Submit a budget
  • Approve all class check requests
  • Monitors expenditures and is responsible for making other officers, parent advisors, Leadership teacher, and bookkeeper are aware of budgetary issues
  • Oversees all fundraisers - $750 – Frosh, $1000 – Soph, $1000 – Junior, $750 - Senior
  • Senior – Holiday Wreaths
  • Junior – Graduation Leis
  • Sophmores – Grams (teddy, etc.)
  • Freshmen – Water sales at graduation
